Flamsteed History of Astronomy Group Meeting.
In 1610, Galileo published Sidereus Nuncius – The Starry Messenger – the first book of observations of the night sky with a telescope. The craters on the Moon, the moons of Jupiter, and the wealth of stars in the Pleiades, Orion, and the Milky Way were all wonders of the universe that had never been seen before. In this talk, Andy Sawers brings Sidereus Nuncius to life, explaining what Galileo saw, what he understood by it all and some of the controversy about the book that would later come to haunt Galileo.
